What is Qigong? Maybe you’ve heard the name before, but honestly don’t really know what it is. Or perhaps you think: isn’t that just for older (and very bendy) people in a park in China?

Let me reassure you: Qigong is far more accessible — and more effective — than you might imagine. It’s not a trick or a sport, but an ancient self-care practice that helps you release stress, get your energy flowing and feel calm and grounded in your own body again.

Summary

Qigong is an ancient Chinese self-care & healing practice that brings together movement, breath and awareness. It looks simple — gentle, flowing movements — but the effect runs deep. Your nervous system calms, your breath drops, and your energy begins to flow freely again. For many people, it feels as if their whole body hits ‘reset’. In this article, you’ll discover what Qigong really is, why it works so powerfully, and why it’s the perfect practice for women 40+ to release stress, boost energy and feel stronger from within. Small movements, big impact.

What Qigong did for me

Picture this: a head full of to-do’s, shoulders up by your ears, breath stuck high in your chest. That was me, a few years ago. Always “on”. Always caring. Always rushing.

Until I discovered Qigong.

I started tentatively, not knowing what to expect. But after just a few gentle movements and a deeper breath, I suddenly felt space in my body. My mind went quieter, my breath dropped, my shoulders softened. It felt as if my whole system was finally allowed to switch off.

All those chattering monkeys in my head went silent for a moment. And that alone was a revelation.

So, what is Qigong?

Qigong (pronounced chee-gung) literally means working with energy. It’s an ancient Chinese practice where movement, breath and awareness come together.

Think of it as a self-care ritual for your whole system: body, mind and energy.

With soft, flowing movements, you bring yourself back into balance. And the beauty is: anyone can do it. You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need any experience. You just need to show up, exactly as you are.

What Qigong does for you

Qigong may look simple, but the effects are profound:

🌿 Your nervous system calms → you shift from stress to rest.
🌿 Your energy flows more freely → you feel lighter and more vital.
🌿 Your muscles and joints become more supple.
🌿 Your fascia grows stronger and healthier (which is vital to keep your muscles, bones and organs well supported).
🌿 You feel more grounded — not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too.
🌿 You experience more space from within.

Why this is so needed in this phase of life

Maybe this feels familiar: you’re always “on”.
Running. Caring. Carrying. Your head keeps going, even when your body is begging you to stop.
And deep down you know: I can’t keep this up forever.

I know that feeling all too well. My nervous system was in overdrive for years. My body constantly thought it was in danger. Rest? I’d forgotten what that was. I lived from tension.

And this is exactly where Qigong makes such a difference. It brings you back into your parasympathetic nervous system — the famous rest & digest mode. It’s like your body finally exhales: oh yes, this is what true relaxation feels like.

My body had completely forgotten how that felt… maybe yours has too.

These gentle Qigong movements may look small. But their impact is powerful: your shoulders drop, your breath deepens, your heartbeat slows. Your body remembers what it’s like to feel safe. To feel spacious. To build resilience instead of running empty.

And that’s exactly what so many women 40+ need. Not another list of “shoulds”. Not punishing workouts that drain you. But a practice that nourishes you. Holds you. Helps you stand strong and soft at the same time.

And if you’re younger than 40? Even better. Start now, before burnout knocks on your door.

Qigong in everyday life

What I love most about Qigong: it doesn’t stop at the mat. It flows into everything. The way you breathe. The way you move. The way you respond.

You don’t just learn exercises. You learn a way of moving. I’d even say: a way of living. A way to keep returning to calm, clarity and strength from within.
